Why learn Tamil?

Tamil is a widely spoken language in Malaysia. Knowing how to speak this language gives one access to a whole new culture and art, besides being able to understand and communicate with someone on the street.

This class is divided into three parts of increasing learning and proficiency of the Tamil language. Part 1 of this class will introduce you to the basic letters in the Tamil language, namely the vowels, consonants, and consonantal vowels. You will learn how to write each letter and generate sounds related to the letter. You will also learn how to form simple words using the letters.  In Part 2, you will learn how to form four and more letter words and their meanings, increase your vocabulary in Tamil, and learn how to form sentences. In Part 3, you will learn the basic grammar rules in Tamil, spot errors in words, learn the difference between written (formal) Tamil and spoken Tamil. About the teacher

Dr. Mani is a retired USM lecturer. He was neither educated in a Tamil school nor has taken any certification course in Tamil. He learned the Tamil language on his own because of his late father's reminder and advice not to forget this language.  After learning how to read and write in Tamil, he is now passionate to teach others Tamil, especially to those with no prior exposure to this language. His wish is that everyone in Malaysia should know how to communicate in the four languages common to this country, namely Malay, English, Tamil and Mandarin. This, according to him, is the uniqueness of Malaysia!
